Marty Linsky describes the work of leadership as akin to serving as a grief counselor, making the point that leadership practitioners need to become adept at holding others as they navigate losses inherent in adaptive work. Further adding to the complexity is that we’re often viewed as being responsible for imposing these losses in pursuit of achieving our purpose.
A foundational step in building the capacity to help others surface, hold, and bear losses is learning how to effectively validate the experiences, fears, and emotions of others without judgement. Validation is not something that comes naturally for most of us (including me), but it’s a superpower that you can easily develop. Practicing validation will not only make you more adept in the work of leadership, but it will also make you a better coworker, supervisor, friend, and partner.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the concept of validation, including pitfalls and misconceptions. We’ll also explore common invalidating practices to help us identify missteps. No preparation is required for the workshop, nor are you expected to know anything about validation beforehand. All that is required is a willingness to practice in small breakout groups, which will be a great opportunity to connect (or reconnect) with other NCLI alums.
